With modern rap, it's more a market than anything else. All the artists sound the same because people know that's what sells now, and they aren't gonna stop until we stop buying it. Interesting fact; more white tweens buy rap CDs than actually black people!

However, "old skool" and alternative rap is still awesome (because itz alternat1ve makes it nonconformist and theirf0re beter) because it's mostly done by outrageously poor people and is about their struggles, not necessarily "in the ghetto", rapping about things like coin laundry and how finding dates sucks. It's essentially poetry, but with a beat and coming at you in a way you can't get in metal/rock...
